This challenge aims to design new innovative products from sand that still looks and feels like sand in it's finished form.

One of Earth’s many natural resources that is not properly exploited is sand; it’s mostly used in its industrial form which goes through high levels of processing before manufacturing. Sand is rarely used in its natural form and after it’s processed you won’t be able to tell that your product was made of sand.

Difference between processed and unprocessed sand:

The composition of sand varies, depending on the local rock sources and conditions, but the most common constituent of sand in inland continental settings and non-tropical coastal settings is silica (silicon dioxide, or SiO2), usually in the form of quartz. The second most common type of sand is calcium carbonate, for example aragonite.

For sand to be used industrially, it usually goes through a long process and heavy treatment to alter many of its natural composition, depending on what it’ll be used for. For example, manufacturing plants add sand to a mixture of clay and other materials, such as straw or similar binders, for manufacturing bricks, and many more examples that greatly alter it. What we aim for with this challenge is to create a product from sand with minimal processing so it still looks and feels like sand in its final form.

The idea is to create a special product created from sand that still looks and feels like sand in its final form, it helps that the its very cheap (40 EGP per Cubic meter). There have been instances were sand is used for packaging, as well as creating a couple of more products. Our aim is to use sand in even more innovative ways and create our own innovative products from Egyptian sand that still looks and feels like sand in its finished form.

Designing new innovative products from sand that still looks and feels like sand, as well as the process of creating it and what should be used to make it, the product should be:

1- innovative and low processed

2- you should send us how you're going to make the product, the process of molding and casting it and the ingredients you will be using

The winner will be awarded 6000 EGP, provided the solution meets these conditions:

  1. The solver must provide an intial prototype.
  2. The prize will be given in parts, in accordance to milestones set by the solver according to his/her plan of action.
