Local Nutritious Snacks

Overview

In cooperation with the Ruwwad Egypt Foundation in Ezbet Khairallah, Cairo, Yomken.com’s team implemented a solution to the challenge of "Snacks Feeding and Saving", which was published on Yomken.com’s platform under the auspices of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology in order to find innovative solutions to eliminate malnutrition and overcome its negative effects on human physical capabilities and thus the productivity and economic growth of society.

The Challenge

The “Local Nutritious Snacks” challenge aimed to find an innovative and effective idea to overcome malnutrition side effects faced away from medical solutions. It should be easy to implement, economical, healthy, favoured by all groups and ages and containing a variety of vitamins.

The Solution

Ahmed Al Masri introduced the "Snacks of Dates" recipe, which is a fresh wheat embryo and nuts coated with a layer of chocolate. Caramel, coffee and dried fruit are also added to diversify the product and increase its nutritional value. This solution was chosen as one of the best solutions offered to the platform through a scientific committee of specialized experts. It is worth mentioning that the cost of a single meal of dates snacks is estimated at five Egyptian pounds.

The parents received training on the making of the snacks; and after obtaining their consent, blood analysis was conducted in a private lab before and after consuming the snacks on 20 children of the beneficiaries of the activities of the institution. They were selected in close years between 8-10 years and the diversity between males and females was taken by 48% to 52%.

The results were promising as the overall mean red blood cells count in the blood samples of the children participating in the experiment increased to 4.4 cells / μl. While the ratio of red blood cells to a healthy child ranges from 4.0 to 5.2 cells / μl. The average haemoglobin in the blood samples of the children studied was 11.3 g / dL while the healthy child should have average haemoglobin in blood samples 11.5-15.5 g / dl.
