The Cooperation of Mariout Valley Fish farmers is looking for a device for counting fish fingerling in a practical, effective, and time-efficient manner, with a minimum accuracy of 95-98%, instead of the primitive methods currently used results in miscalculations.

An invitation to the electronics engineers, electrical engineers, mechanics and graduates of the Faculty of Fisheries to provide a Fingerling Counting Device and win a reward of LE 20,000 for the best solution, provided the USAID's SEED and Project to implement their solution, in collaboration with Ministry of Trade and Industry and Mariout Valley Fish farmers. Please read on for more details.

The Problem:

Fish farmers are facing a recurrent problem whether when purchasing new fish fingerling from the providers or when distributing the fingering during the feed as primitive methods, such as "tea strainers" are used in counting the fish, resulting in a shortage of agreed quantities.

The size of the fingerling is 12 centimeters almost the size of the finger of the hand. According to the Cooperation of Mariout Valley Fish farmers, this process takes from 5-6 hours for the number of 40 -150 thousand fish and sometimes days for counting by primitive way, not only the problem in the submitted effort and time but also in the lack of accuracy in the available methods cause shortage in the delivered quantities leading to less efficient utilization of the aquaculture as well as potential disputes between the seller and the buyer. (1)

The challenge:

The challenge is to find a device for counting fish fingerling in a practical, effective, and time-efficient manner, with a minimum accuracy of 95-98%, instead of the primitive methods currently used results in miscalculations. The lack of accuracy in the available methods cause shortage in the delivered quantities leading to less efficient utilization of the aquaculture as well as potential disputes between the seller and the buyer. The following criteria should be provided in the proposed solution:

  • The device does not affect the fish's life in any way and treats the fish with sensitivity to reduce the amount of loss.
  • Take into account the size of the fingerlings
  • The device must be water resistant.
  • Easy to transport and can be placed in a car and bear different transport conditions.
  • The expected capacity of the device reaches 50 thousands fish / hour.
  • Easy to be adjusted by workers.
  • The number of fish fingerling appears on an electronic screen.
  • Guarantee for at least two years.

Reward and Terms:

The winner will receive a reward of 20,000 EGP provided by USAID’s Strengthening Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (SEED) Project, to implement the solution in cooperation with the Cooperation of Mariout Valley Fish farmers, according to the following conditions:

  • The solution should meet the aforementioned criteria;
  • The solution should include a clear plan of action including implementation stages, timeline, required tools/materials, estimated budget, and technical support required (if applicable);
  • The reward will be given in installments, in accordance to milestones set by the innovator(s) according to their plan of action;

As per our platform Privacy Policy, in case the intellectual property rights are not registered, the innovator should include the minimum details required to judge the technical validity and feasibility of the solution without full technical specifications.
